1st July 2015

There is a disease known as dry Gangrene—it is often caused when there is not enough blood reaching to the affected tissues of patient’s body, slowly killing the cells and making the infected part of the body useless. Once it is spread to an organ, the doctors have no option other than to amputate that part of the body…no matter how important that body part is to the patient. Sometimes we have to force ourselves to make someone stay in our lives, just because we think that we won’t survive without that particular person, but in reality having that person in our life is doing no good—that person is similar to that gangrene infected organ which we have to either cut off from our body or it will infect the whole of it. Rahul had became that organ for Vaishali—she was trying hard to save her relationship with him, doing everything she could to protect him from being ‘amputated’ from her life—not contacting Dr. Pankaj, changing her shifts so she wouldn’t have to face him, she even thought of leaving heritage for once but then she dropped the idea after thinking twice.
After that day when Pankaj finally confessed what he felt for Vaishali, she changed her phone number. She tried hard to hide about Pankaj from Rahul but eventually she gave up.
“He has the right to know everything.” She said to herself and called Rahul to meet him at the same restaurant where they meet often.
“I will see you at evening.” Vaishali said and disconnected the call. She felt light now, knowing that she won’t have to hide anything from anyone now. But a part of her was still afraid…afraid of the circumstances that will follow after she tells everything to Rahul. She knew that Rahul won’t forgive her and would probably never want to see her again but she have to tell him the truth—the truth that she didn’t love Rahul the same way as she did 3 years ago, that they aren’t the ideal couple that the world thinks they are, and that she started to feel something for Dr. Pankaj which she can’t explain to anyone.
It was 6 in the evening and she was preparing herself for the moment when she found her phone ringing. She saw an unknown number flashing on her screen. Normally she doesn’t receive calls from unknown numbers but that day she picked it up.
“Hello.” Vaishali said over the phone. She waited for the other person to speak but he didn’t respond. She knew it was him, it has to be him.
“Dr. Pankaj?” Vaishali tried to confirm her doubt.
“I knew that you will recognize my silence.” Pankaj said from the other side of the phone.
“How did you get this number? And why are you calling me?” Vaishali asked him in an angry tone but deep down, a part of her was happy to hear his voice.
“I have my sources. I want to meet you Vaishali.”
“But I don’t.”
“Just give me another chance to explain myself. Please Vaishali, I know that you don’t want to be with me and I totally understand that. I just want you to be a part of my life, even if I get you as a lover, a friend or a colleague I don’t care. All I want is to undo what I had done; I want to apologize, Vaishali.” Pankaj said it all in a go.
“Ok fine, I will meet you at evening.” She said.
“Great, I will come to your hostel at 8.” He replied. She said nothing and hung up the call. She was confused now—a part of her was happy that all the things were falling into place after a long time but some part of her was heart-broken because she knew that in the process of saving a drowning relationship she lost someone who could love her eternally. But again, she suppressed that part of herself and walked towards the door of the restaurant where Rahul was already waiting for her.
“So, this is all I wanted you to know.” Vaishali said to Rahul after telling him everything about Pankaj except that he proposed her—she was too afraid to lose Rahul and she knew that she will lose him for sure if she tells him that. She was cursing herself for not completing the promise she made to herself—promise of telling Rahul everything about Pankaj.
“You know what? It’s not a big deal, I mean you are at another hospital and it’s obvious that you will have male colleagues working with you, it’s nothing that you and I can control. I have full faith in you and your love for me. I too work with some of the lady doctors during my research and I didn’t bother to tell you that…because you know that you can’t control everything.” Rahul told her in a casual tone. This was not the reaction she expected from him. He was way too possessive for her to give that kind of reply. She was stunned by his statement. Was it because of the intimacy that almost ended between both of them that he didn’t bother to care? Or is it because he didn’t care at all? Maybe she should have ended this relationship a long time ago. She couldn’t take any more, she has to tell Rahul the whole story of her and Dr. Pankaj…but before she could say anything to him her phone rang. Normally Rahul asked her that who was calling everytime her phone rang. She expected him to ask her but he wasn’t even looking at her, he was busy texting someone.
“I now know who I want to be with.” She said to herself in her mind, she knew that if she continues to hold this relationship, it would eventually destroy both of them, so she decided to finally confess Pankaj about her feelings towards him. The ring of the phone pulled out her from the thoughts that were going in her mind. It was the same number by which Pankaj called her this evening.
“Hello.” She said in an excited voice. With every passing moment she was becoming more and more confident that Pankaj was the right guy for her and she couldn’t wait to meet him now.
“Who’s this?” an unfamiliar voice came from the other side which surprised Vaishali. She was sensing something got wrong, terribly wrong.
“I am Dr. Vaishali Gupta. Who’s speaking?” She asked over the phone. With every passing second, the excitement that she was having before was tuning into fear and anxiety.
“I am calling from Delhi Police. We had an accident near Heritage hospital half an hour ago, the victim died on the spot. We found your number on the call log and speed dial of his phone…we also found a driving license on the name of Pankaj Rana.” The voice from the other side said. The inspector waited for a response but the call was already disconnected…
