BEST FRIENDS FOREVER (PART 2)

There was a time in our lives when we, as kids, lived our lives on our terms—we sleep when we wanted to sleep, we eat whenever our belly demanded for food, we played marriage with a girl or boy of opposite sex without even knowing what it meant. Life was simpler when we were kids. Being grown up is complex, but you know what is more complex? Being grown up with a guy or a girl with whom you played marriage with. Time is dynamic but memories remain static.
Ankit and Alia were a perfect example of how to get confused between choosing your right partner in your best friend and screwing up your friendship for something that you don’t even know about.
“How was your date?” Alia asked Ankit who looked gloomy since he came back. She was hoping to hear something good—like it didn’t go very well or she didn’t like Ankit at all. But why the hell was she thinking like that?
“It went horrible. I told you I look like a clown in this outfit.” Ankit replied and pointed towards the red t-shirt he was wearing. Normally, Alia would be sad along with sad Ankit but today was something different. She was smiling.
“Why the hell are you smiling? I got dumped by a girl.” Ankit frowned upon seeing her smile.
“Nothing, forget her. She was not the girl for you anyways.” Replied Alia, trying to hide her constant smile pasted on her face.
“And how do you know that?”
“Because I am.” Alia said and stopped. She wanted to say something more but she couldn’t.
“What?” Ankit asked Alia in a confused tone. He thought that he probably heard it wrong, but a part of him was hoping that maybe he heard it right. Maybe Alia too wants what he wants. But neither did he have the balls to ask her, nor did Alia have the courage to tell him. Friendship—sometime it is just the wrong thing to have.
“Because I am…I am perfect for you.” Alia finally muttered up the courage and told Ankit about how she feels about him.
“You are kidding, right?” Ankit asked. He was shocked. He couldn’t think of something better so say at that moment.
“Do I look like I am kidding, Ankit?” Alia said and made an expressionless face, poker face- as Ankit used to call that. Alia used to make that face when she was extremely serious about something.
“NO, NOT that face Alia, you can’t be serious about this. We are best friends, how could you even think like this?”
“Just tell me, don’t you want this too?”
“No, I don’t.” Ankit replied. Of course he was lying, but he wasn’t sure about how he feels about Alia. He only knew that he can’t hurt Alia ever, and he knew that their relationship probably won’t work because they both were terrible in making relationships.
“Tell me why? Give me a single reason and I will promise that I will never bother you again with this question.” Alia said to Ankit. She knew that he was scared, scared of coming out of the comfortable, cozy blanket of friendship and face the chilly, cold ups and downs of love but she also knew that deep down within his heart, Ankit too feels something for Alia.
“You are being stupid. We are friends since we were kids.”
“Exactly, we are not kids anymore.” Alia replied.
“But what if we fail to live up to each other’s expectations? What if the relation won’t work out? What if…” Ankit was about to say something but his lips got sealed by Alia’s, they KISSED…although it only went for some seconds but those couple of seconds answered all the questions that were raising in Ankit’s mind. It just felt right. In those couple of seconds, the whole flashback of the happiest of moments that he and Alia shared and cherished together played in front of his eyes. He knew that it was right. All his fears, his insecurities went away with that kiss. He now knows what he has to do.
“It is my first kiss, so don’t judge me for that.” Alia said to Ankit and gave him a smile.
“Are you serious?”
“What do you mean I am serious? Have you kissed someone else?”
“I could say no if that makes you happy.”
“You are gross, you know that?” Alia punched him playfully on his chest and smiled.
“I know I am, but not more than you. Seducing your best friend, how cheap?” Ankit said and chuckled.
“Shut up.” Alia replied.
“I love you.” Ankit said.
“I love you.” Alia said.
They both kissed once again, this time it was much longer than just a couple of seconds.
Life is full of surprises and Ankit thought that he got the biggest one as Alia, but like I said—life is full of surprises, some makes you happy, some makes you sad…some are the good ones, and some are really, really bad….
